Scariest videogame moment

Joining the debate (here, here and here), I think the list should include the Nightmare level in Max Payne (here's the link to a YouTube video that didn't support embedding, in case you don't remember it / haven't played it).

That was more surreal than scary. You really need some kind of threat to survival, even more so if considerable re-play investment is at-risk, in order to stimulate fear. Mere passive effects are not enough, in my opinion.

Hello Patrick, thanks for the input. Interesting point. Still, I would keep my vote :). Maybe it was just some passive effects, but it did feel scary - even if not a real threat to my game progression.

In fact, I don't believe that significant emotions can only be stimulated by imediate in-game progression, rewards and punishments. But that's subject for another post...
